description

The annual herbaceous plant is very similar in appearance to the common lamb's lettuce ( Valerianella locusta ). It usually reaches heights of between 15 and 35 cm. The plant is usually strong and sparsely branched. The upper stalk leaves are lanceolate to linear-lanceolate in shape and serrated at the base, the lower ones are spatulate-lanceolate in shape.

The inflorescence is forked several times, with single flowers in the armpits. The flowers are pale blue in color and reach lengths of around 1.5 to 2 mm. The fruit is almost spherical in shape, looks puffy and reaches a length of about 2.5 mm. Compared to the large, about 0.4 to 0.5 mm long calyx tooth, it is clearly bulbous and single-furrowed. At the base of the large calyx tooth there are occasionally one or two teeth about 0.1 mm long. On a fruit compartment with seeds there are two empty and larger compartments. Most of the time the fruit is bare, more rarely a little hairy.

The furrowed lamb's lettuce flowers mainly in June and July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 14 or 16.

Occurrence and endangerment

The furrowed lamb's lettuce occurs in Central and Southern Europe and in North Africa. Its distribution area includes the countries Morocco, Algeria, Spain, France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Ireland, Denmark, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Switzerland, Italy, Corsica, Sicily, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Ukraine, Moldova, European and Asian Turkey, Russia, the Caucasus region, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is a sub-Mediterranean-Mediterranean floral element. In Germany and Austria it occurs scattered or rarely in the entire area. In places it is missing even over longer stretches. It is rarely found in Switzerland.

Valerianella rimosa grows in grain fields. The species prefers fresh to more or less dry, warm and nutrient-rich soils. It can take root up to 20 cm deep and is a clay pointer. It is a character species of the Secalietea class and occurs mainly in societies of the associations Caucalidion lappulae or Aperion.

In Germany, the species is classified as endangered on the Red List . In Austria it is particularly endangered in the western Alps.
