A Giardino segreto ( Italian , "secret garden") is a small garden that belongs to a building, is delimited by hedges or walls and cannot be seen from the outside. It has the character of a “private” garden, almost a room in the house, and is usually only accessible from there.

Giardini segreti originated in the 15th and 16th centuries during the Renaissance and Late Renaissance periods in northern Italy and were used for the retreat and recovery of wealthy landowners. In the design, attention was paid to carefully crafted details, and rules such as the golden ratio were also applied.

A modern Giardino segreto was laid out in Berlin in 2006 within the Schöneberger Südgelände nature park by the artist group Odious. It is about 3000 m² in size, enclosed by a concrete wall and assigned to a 4000 m² locomotive hall. It consists almost entirely of steel elements.

Further Giardini segreti are located in the Nymphenburg Palace Park (cabinet gardens), in the Villa Mondragone , Villa d'Este and in the Parc del Laberint d'Horta .
