Geir Jørgen Bekkevold (born November 19, 1963 in Horten ) is a Norwegian pastor and politician of the Christian Democratic Kristelig Folkeparti (KrF). Since 2009 he has been a member of parliament in Storting .

Life

After the completion of the high school he studied from 1983 to 1991 theology . He worked as a military pastor until 1992 before he was appointed chaplain and pastor in Skien . From 1999 to 2009 he was a member of the Skien City Council. Between 2003 and 2007, Bekkevold was also a member of the Fylkesting in what was then the province of Telemark . From 2008 to 2010 he headed his party in his home province.

Bekkevold entered the Norwegian national parliament in Storting for the first time in the 2009 general election . There he represents the constituency of Telemark and he was initially a member of the local and administrative committee. From June 2011 he was also part of the Control and Constitutional Committee. Following the 2013 election , he moved on to the Family and Culture Committee, where he served as vice chairman. After the 2017 Storting election , he became the second vice chairman of the committee before taking over the chairmanship of the health and welfare committee in January 2019. In January 2019 he also became deputy group leader of the KrF group in parliament.

Positions

In the summer of 2018 he worked as a pastor at a same-sex wedding of a party colleague. The fact that the Christian Democratic KrF rejects same-sex weddings in parts led to internal party discussions and an unusually high number of party withdrawals were reported in the period that followed.

Bekkevold was one of the opponents of the KrF joining the Solberg government , which also includes the right-wing Fremskrittspartiet (FrP). However, this was finally carried out and Bekkevold declared that he did not want to run again in the parliamentary elections in 2021 . Among other things, he criticized the fact that the government contract stipulated that part of the development aid should go to governments in order to hold back refugees.
