The yellow rump girlitz ( Crithagra xanthopygius , syn .: Serinus xanthopygius ) is a species of finch from the goldfinch-like subfamily . The species is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.
description
The yellow rump girl reaches a body length of eleven to twelve centimeters. The sexes are similar, the females are just slightly lighter.
The body plumage of this species is largely uniformly gray, only the rump is bright yellow. The upper tail-coverts are pale brown and yellowish washed over. The control springs are matt dark brown. One eye stripe is missing. The chin and throat are brownish white. Young birds are similar to the adult birds, but are more intense gray-brown and occasionally have a yellowish throat spot.
The distribution area of the Gelbbürzelgirlitz reaches that of the Reichenowgirlitz . However, this is smaller, has a white throat and a pale gray underside of the body with only a few vertical stripes.
Way of life
The way of life of this girlitz species has so far been largely unexplored.
The breeding behavior is only known from captivity. The breeding season is 14 days as with almost all girlitzes. The female breeds alone. The nestling period is 17 days. After leaving the nest, the young birds are looked after by the parent birds for a further three weeks.
Distribution area
The distribution area of the yellow rump girl is limited to Ethiopia and Eritrea . It is particularly common in the highlands of Eritrea at altitudes between 1000 and 2500 meters. Its habitat is savannah, loosely wooded grassland. It has also opened up human settlement areas and occurs on banks and in fields.
