The Reichenowgirlitz ( Crithagrareichenowi , Syn . : Serinusreichenowi ) is a species from the finch family . In East Africa, the Reichenowgirlitz is a common bird that can be found regularly, especially in the arid regions. The species is occasionally kept as an ornamental bird in Europe.
description
The Reichenowgirlitz reaches a body length of eleven centimeters. The plumage of both sexes is similar.
The face is gray. The over-eye and forehead stripes are whitish to light yellow. The beard stripe is black. The underside of the body is whitish with brown dashes. The top of the body is sparrow-like gray-brown. The rump is strikingly yellow. The beak is brownish horn-colored, the base of the lower beak is slightly lightened. The eyes are brown, the legs are light brown to dark flesh-colored. Young birds are similar to adult birds, but are a bit brownish on the upper side of the body and have a slightly more intense dashed line.
There are possibilities of confusion in the area of distribution with the Angolagirlitz and the Strichelgirlitz . The Strichelgirlitz is slightly larger and more long-tailed than the Reichenowgirlitz. It is also more dotted on the underside of the body. The Reichenowgirlitz differs from the Angolagirlitz by its lighter underside and the pure white throat.
Distribution area
The distribution area of Reichenowgirlitz extends from southern Ethiopia to Uganda and Tanzania . Its habitat is bushland and grasslands interspersed with trees. It occurs mainly on slopes and river banks. The Reichenowgirlitz has also opened up human settlement space and is also found on plantations and in gardens. Its diet consists mainly of grass seeds and various herbs. He looks for his food mainly on the ground.
Way of life
The food habits of the Reichenowgirlitz have not yet been conclusively investigated. Presumably it feeds on seeds. It occurs predominantly singly, in pairs or small groups of up to 15 individuals. Occasionally up to 50 individuals gather at water holes.
The reproductive biology of this species has not yet been conclusively investigated. The breeding season falls in Ethiopia in May, in Somalia in September. The nest is a small bowl made of fine roots and blades of grass. It is usually on the branch of a tree or bush. The clutch consists of three bluish white eggs with brown and black color markings. The incubation period is 14 days. The nestling period is 17 days. You are self-employed around the age of 30.
