description
With a total length of about seven centimeters, male yellow Congo tetra are slightly larger than their female counterparts. The body is elongated and heavily flattened on the sides. However, with increasing age, the males in particular become relatively high back. The species shows a pronounced sexual dimorphism . The dorsal and caudal fins of the males are clearly elongated and end in white tips. In the black-colored center of the caudal fin, the fin rays protrude slightly above the fin edge, above and below a yellow coloration shows. The anal fin is drawn out like a lobe in the middle and lined with white. Females do not have these distinctive features and have colorless fins. The yellowish translucent body has a blue-green to purple sheen and occasionally a brown longitudinal stripe, which merges into the black stripe of the caudal fin at the tail root. The coloring of the females is simpler. Typically the yellow Congo tetra also has an adipose fin .
Number of fin rays :
- Dorsal 2/8
- Anal 3–4 / 19–20
Way of life
The peaceful schooling fish feeds omnivorously . It does not care for the brood and spawns over vegetation after being driven heavily. Three to ten eggs are ejected per pairing. The larvae hatch about a week later at a water temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.
