The yellow-winged ore hover fly ( Cheilosia impressa ) is a fly from the family of hover flies (Syrphidae). The genus Cheilosia with its about 60 species is bound to forests, mostly moist deciduous forests.

features

The yellow-winged ore hover fly is a small, dark species with a body length of 6 to 8 mm. The entire head is black, only the antennae stand out black-brown. The label and the mesonotum are black haired and dotted. The edge of the shield is also bristled with black. Light and dark hair can be seen on the abdomen. An important distinguishing feature is the yellow base of the wing. The legs are also black. Together with Cheilosia schnabli , this species has a button-shaped bulge on the outside of the front hip, which is a unique distinguishing feature among the European Cheilosia species. There may be a risk of confusion with the larger species of yellow hawthorn hover fly ( Myolepta luteola ), which, however, has an easily recognizable flat color gradient from yellow to black on the abdomen.

Occurrence

It is common in Europe, Siberia and East Asia. In Europe it occurs from the plain to the mountains, there in deciduous forest, boggy-swampy lowlands, montane meadows and grassland stands up to over 2000 m altitude.

Way of life

The adults usually fly at a height of 2 to 5 m. They are flower visitors mainly on umbellifers, but also on thistles, buttercups and cranesbill plants. The larvae feed on phytophagus in the root runners, stems and petioles of burdock or kunigunden herb (water fodder).
