The yellow-rumped cacique or yellow back-end bird ( Cacicus cela ), also Arendajo , is a South American songbird of the family of blackbirds .

description

Cacicus cela - Peru - nest - 8.jpg

The males of the Gelbbürzelkassike reach a body length of 27.5 to 29 cm. The females are much smaller and only reach a size of 24 to 25 cm. The plumage is glossy black with yellow feathers on the wing covers, the trunk and the tail. This is where the sexes differ only slightly.

Way of life

It is a very sociable species that is particularly active in large flocks at dusk. These swarms are also very loud and can therefore be heard from afar.

distribution

Distribution area of the Gelbbürzelkassike

The species inhabits northern South America from eastern Panama via Venezuela to Brazil , Peru and Bolivia . There are also some populations on the Caribbean island of Trinidad .

Mainly treetops on the edges of the forest, clearings and semi-open landscapes are inhabited here.

Reproduction

They nest in colonies in hanging bag nests, which they usually build near wasp nests. It is believed that this neighborhood offers some protection from predatory toucans like Arassaris , who frequently plunder these clutches. Sick put forward the theory that the wasps also keep a fly, Philornis pici , away from the clutches of the yellow-backed browbirds, whose smell they are supposedly attracted to, and thus prevent parasitism by a species of mite. Another danger is the short-billed masked tyrant ( Legatus leucophaius ), which often lays its eggs in the nests of the yellow -rumped kassike and throws their eggs out of the nest.
