The Gelbrandige ball neck Bock ( Acmaeops marginatus ) is a beetle from the family of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae). It is one of six species of its genus , of which four other species occur in Europe .

features

Characteristics of the adults

The yellow-edged ball collar reaches a body length of 7 to 11 millimeters. The body is built generically typical and has a ball-like pronotum with a strongly curved pronotum . The elytra are variable in their color and can be reddish-brown or yellowish-brown, but mostly they are black and have only a yellow outer edge. The elytra are lightly haired and edged at the tip with an acute outer angle. The antennae are inserted in front of the level of the eyes and the first antenna links are yellow at the base. The thighs and the tarsi are partly colored yellow.

Characteristics of the larvae

The larvae of the genus reach a length of 11 to 19 millimeters; the body and head are clearly flattened. The antennae are short and tripartite; the second antenna element is extremely small and unsclerotized. There are 2 or 3 small stemmata on either side of the head capsule . The maxillae are slender and the malae have a broad, obliquely pigmented band. The abdominal sclerites of the abdominal segments have no bristles and the ninth abdominal segment does not have a caudal spine at the end of the body.

distribution

The yellow-edged spherical collar is a Siberian element of fauna and occurs in northern to central Europe, southwest and eastern Europe, Turkey , Russia (Siberia), Mongolia and China . In Central Europe there is no evidence in Denmark , Luxembourg and Liechtenstein . In Germany, the species is documented from all federal states except Baden-Württemberg , North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland . In Austria it is known from several federal states, in Switzerland only from the canton of Valais .

Way of life

The yellow-edged spherical neck buck lives mainly in pine forests in the lowlands and is thermophilic. The adults can be found from May to August. They are diurnal and fly in sparse pine stands, preferring warm, south-facing slopes and open clearcuts. They can also be found on lying branches, stacks of wood and also on wooden fences made of pine that has not been debarked. You will visit the blossoms of blossoming pine trees.

The species is monophagous and develops in pines ( Pinus ) and less often in spruces ( Picea ). The larvae take two years to develop, and areas of root and crown wood damaged by fire are often used. The larvae mostly live at the base of the trees in the thick bark, which is still on the wood, and develop there together with subcortical fungi that live under the bark. They leave the wood after two years and dig into the top soil layer, where they overwinter as larvae and pupate the next spring .

Systematics

The yellow-edged ball-necked beetle is an independent species of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) and is classified there in the genus of ball-necked bucks ( Acmaeops LeConte , 1850 ) within the narrow-headed beetles (Lepturinae). The first scientific description comes from Johann Christian Fabricius , who described it as Leptura marginatus in 1792 . In addition to this species, the genus contains five other species.

The name for the genus is derived from the Greek "akmaios" for "blooming" or "strong" and from "ops" for "eye". The epithet "marginatus" means "bordered" and, like the common German name, refers to the yellow border of the wing covers.
