Gelligaer (also Gelli Gaer , Welsh : Gelli-gaer ) is a place and a community in the Welsh principal area Caerphilly . The community had 18,408 inhabitants at the 2011 census.
geography
The Gelligaer community is located just over 200 meters above sea level in south Wales in mid-west Caerphilly on the border with Merthyr Tydfil . While the community in the north borders on the Caerphilly communities Bargoed and Darran Valley , it shares a border with the Merthyr Tydfill Community Bedlinog in the north and west . All other borders run within Caerphilly: in the southwest with Nelson , in the south with Aber Valley and Llanbradach and Pwllypant and in the east with Maesycwmmer and Pengam . The Gelligaer settlement itself is in the middle of a hill between two rivers; other settlements include Ystrad Mynach and Hengoed . Within the community run alongside the River Nant Cylla the streets A469 road and A472 road .
history
Due to its location, Gelligaer played a key role in the development of South Wales. There is a Roman fortress around the settlement , but also Bronze Age tombs, Norman churches and other relics from the past centuries. The Roman fortress was discovered in the early 20th century and later opened to visitors. In the historical landscape of Gelligaer Common , which is not congruent with today's community, there are among others the Cairn Carn Bugail and the Menhir Gelligaer , which now belong to the Bedlinog community , as well as the remains of the Capel Gwladys in honor of Gwladys , which are now part of Bargoed , the mother of Tydfil .
In the early 1870s resulting Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales is Gelligaer as a village, parish, and "sub-district" of the district (ger .: district ) Merthyr-Tydvil in Glamorgan described.
