The city or municipality flag is a municipal jurisdiction icon .

In Europe in the Middle Ages, a city was granted the right to have its own coat of arms with its town charter . The city ​​colors and thus also the design of the flag were mostly derived from it ( see also coat of arms banner ). Well-known examples of city flags in the Middle Ages were the flags of the Hanseatic cities .

Over time, more and more municipal flags were set by ordinances and coats of arms. Today, municipal flags are common in many countries around the world as a sign of administrative sovereignty.
