The common gray weevil ( Brachyderes incanus ), also known as the gray pine needle weevil , is a beetle from the family of the weevils (Curculionidae). He is the only representative of the genus in Central Europe.
features
The animals reach a length of 7 to 10.5 millimeters and have an elongated physique. They are black or black-brown in color and have light, adjacent hairs and coppery, brown or light gray scales on the top. The antennae are red-brown, the shaft is darker towards the end. The tarsi are also red-brown, only the claws are black. The tibia (splints) of the forelegs are strong at the end of the males, but otherwise weakly curved in the females. The trunk is short and broadly connected to the head at the base. The antenna furrows reaching to the compound eyes are closed at the front. The pronotum is noticeably wider than it is long, the scutellum is very small. The narrow wings are elongated and have no shoulder bumps. The second pair of wings is not formed.
Occurrence
The species occurs in Europe , north to central Fennoscandia , in the south to the north of the Balkan Peninsula and to central Italy. It is absent in the British Isles . The species is found in pine forests all year round.
Way of life
The adults sit on the pines and feed on their needles. They winter between the bark sheds. The females lay their eggs in the ground in spring. The larvae develop on the roots of the pine trees. The species can occasionally appear as a pest in young pine crops .
