The common good Atlas is a scientific study on the welfare contribution ( public value ) of companies and organizations. A Public Value Atlas was published in 2014, 2015, 2017 and on September 22, 2019 for Switzerland and in 2015 and May 2019 for Germany.

The Public Value Atlas is based on the St.Gallen Public Value approach. Companies and organizations are accordingly assigned an important role for the common good because they influence the individual's experience of the social environment. As a social being, humans are dependent on this environment in order to be able to develop as an individual. In this sense, organizations contribute to the common good when they have a positive effect on the community in the perception of individuals.

The methodological approach of the study also follows from this anchoring of the contribution to the common good in the perception and assessment of the population. For the Public Value Atlas, a representative sample of the population (14,502 people in Switzerland in 2017) is asked how they rate the public value contribution of the largest and best-known companies and organizations. The results are published in the form of a ranking list. The return of the common good to the assessment by the population is a special feature of the Common Good Atlas and follows the theoretical stipulation that the common good cannot be determined on the basis of "facts" by experts, but only arises through public perception and appreciation.

The study, led by Timo Meynhardt , is supported by the Center for Leadership and Values ​​in Society at the University of St. Gallen and the Dr. Arend Oetker Chair of Business Psychology and Leadership at the HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management .

Results

The results of the Public Value Atlas show that the subject of the common good is very important to people. For example, 73% of respondents in Switzerland tend to be concerned that too little attention is being paid to the common good. In Germany, as many as 81% of those surveyed tend to be concerned that too little attention is being paid to the common good.

In both countries it can be seen that organizations in the public and non-profit sector are attributed a particularly high contribution to the common good by the population. The first places in the ranking in Germany are occupied by the fire brigade , the technical relief organization and the German Red Cross . In Switzerland, Rega , Spitex and the Swiss Paraplegic Foundation occupy the first three places.

The Public Value Atlas receives a lot of media attention. In Switzerland, for example, the SonntagsZeitung , the idw - Informationsdienst Wissenschaft and the St. Galler Tagblatt reported on the publication. In Germany, the atlas was picked up by FOCUS Online , Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk and Tagesschau , among others . In the reporting, the differences between the sectors, the great diversity of the ratings and the rankings of individual companies and organizations were particularly emphasized.

The study also aroused great interest among the companies and organizations represented in the Public Value Atlas. Some organizations issued press releases and took the opportunity to exchange experiences at a round table.
