Gene Bilbrew (born 1923 in Los Angeles ; † 1974 ) was an American cartoonist and fetish artist . In addition to his name, he used some pseudonyms, including ENEG (genes written backwards), Van Rod and Bondy .

Bilbrew attended the School of Visual Arts in New York with Burne Hogarth at the same time as Eric Stanton . His career began with the Los Angeles Sentinel, an African American newspaper, in which he illustrated the comic strip The Bronze Bomber , together with his co-author Bill Alexander . He also drew the Hercules series in Health Magazine . Throughout his career as a freelance artist, he accepted commissions from the Afro-American community, for example modernizing the artistic design of Victorian front pages such as the Gypsy Witch Dream Book or Old Aunt Dinah's Dream Book for the Wholesale Sales Corporation.

Around 1950 Bilbrew became the assistant to the influential comic artist Will Eisner on the important classic comic book The Spirit . After Jules Feiffer was drafted, the creator of Clifford , a children's humor site, he took over the series.

Bilbrew's later fame was established through his collaboration with Irving Klaw and his distribution company Movie Star News , whom he met through Stanton's connections and for whom he worked as a fetish artist from 1951. Many of his illustrations appeared in the fetish magazine Exotique between 1956 and 1959 . The focus of his work as a fetish artist was the representation of female dominance and bondage .
