Gene Jefferson

Walter "Gene" Jefferson (* 1930 or 1931; † October 16, 2019 in Brooklyn ) was an American jazz musician ( saxophone , clarinet , flute ).

Jefferson was originally from Panama and came to New York in the early 1960s with saxophonist and flautist Mauricio Smith. After recently, he was active in the Afro-Cuban and other Latin American music scenes. In addition to the blues and jazz saxophone, he could also play authentic Cuban charanga flute and Dominican merengue . He was tenor saxophonist in the orchestra of the singer Tito Rodríguez , to be heard on Carnaval de las Americas . In addition to his work with Tito Rodriguez, he was a member of the Ray Charles Orchestra, the Marcelino Guerra Orchestra, the Collective Black Artists , the Saxofonica by Orlando Marin and the Kari-B3 by Benjamin Lapidus; he also played with Charlie Palmieri , Louis Ramirez and Arsenio Rodríguez . He was also a member of the house band of the Apollo Theater in the 1960s and 1970s . In 1982 he was in the brass section of Arrow's original recording of "Hot, Hot, Hot", a Soca / Calypso piece that became a worldwide mega hit. For 39 years he was a member of the band Bobby Sanabrias Ascensión , to be heard on the albums ¡New York City Aché! and the Grammy nominated big band album Live & In Clave !!! which was released in 2000. As part of his work at Sanabria, he also participated in Roswell Rudd's album Roswell Rudd & Yomo Toro with Bobby Sanabria & Ascension (2003); in the field of jazz he was involved in 12 recording sessions between 1993 and 2011, according to Tom Lord , also with Benjamin Lapidus.
