Map with all coordinates: The General Holmes Drive is a city highway in the southeast of Sydney in the east of the Australian state of New South Wales . It connects The Grand Parade in Brighton-Le-Sands with Joyce Drive in Mascot . Most of the street belongs to Metroad 1, which connects Kingsford Smith International Airport with the city center.
The freeway was named after the Australian general William Holmes (1862-1917) who fell in World War I.

On the west bank of Botany Bay , General Holmes Drive in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands is the continuation of The Grand Parade (Met-1) north through the suburb of Kyeemagh . At the southwest corner of the airport grounds, where the East Freeway (Met-5) joins from the west, the freeway crosses the Cooks River , turns east and runs in a tunnel under the airport runways.
General Holmes Drive then runs around the airport to its east side. There, north of the Botany district , the Southern Cross Drive (Met-1) branches off to the east at Mill Pond . General Holmes Drive loses its numbering there and continues a few hundred meters along the eastern border of the airport grounds to Mascot . There it ends on Joyce Drive .
State of development
In the area of Kyeemagh , General Holmes Drive has been expanded to six lanes. It has eight lanes along the airport. The East Freeway can only be driven east from General Holmes Drive and only one exit from the East Freeway onto General Holmes Drive west.
