The musculus geniohyoideus ( Latin for "chin-hyoid bone muscle") is a skeletal muscle of the head. It has its origin in the symphysis of the lower jaw and its attachment to the hyoid bone . It serves to pull the hyoid bone forward in the first phase of the act of swallowing and acts together with the digastric muscle and mylohyoid muscle . The innervation is carried out by the first spinal nerve (C1), whose nerve fibers reach the muscle via the hypoglossal nerve (cranial nerve XII).
