Genista monspessulana (Syn. Teline monspessulana (L.) K. Koch , Cytisus monspessulanus L. ) is a species from the genus of the gorse ( Genista ).

features

The species is usually less than 3 m high and rarely reaches a height of 5 m. The branches are hairy silvery-silky. The stipules are less than 2 mm in size. The leaves are pinnate to three, the leaflets are 10 to 15 mm in size, obverse-lanceolate to obovate, usually twice as long as wide. The upper side of the leaf is glabrous, the underside is hairy or protruding. The petiole is less than 5 mm long.

The inflorescence consists of 5 to 10 flowers , which are in an almost head-shaped cluster , on an axillary short shoot. The terminal or middle flower opens last. The flower stalk is 1 to 3 mm long.

The calyx is hairy and silky and 5 to 7 mm long. The crown is yellow to light yellow. The flag is 10 to 15 mm long. The legume is 15 to 25 mm long, densely hairy, and dark brown to black when ripe. The ripe pods burst on dry heat with a bang along the upper and lower seam and the two sleeve halves roll up spirally apart and hurl it the 3 to 8 seeds far into the environment - as well as other brooms and when broom is common . The seeds are shiny brown to black, round to oval and have a cream-colored to yellow elaiosome .

The species is native to the Mediterranean and the Azores. It was introduced on the west coast of the USA and is considered an invasive species there .
