Gennady Alexandrovich Suchkov

Gennadi Alexandrowitsch Sutschkow ( Russian Геннадий Александрович Сучков ; born January 7, 1947 in the village of Mitropolje, Gorky Oblast ; † August 7, 2013 in Moscow ) was a Russian admiral . He commanded the Pacific Fleet (2001) and the Northern Fleet (2001-2003).

Life

Suchkov studied from 1964 to 1969 at the Frunze Naval Officer College in Leningrad . He began his officer career as a commander of the torpedo group of the mine / torpedo combat section (GA-3) on a submarine of the Northern Fleet. He was then from 1970 to 1972 combat section commander, first officer and after completing higher officer courses in July 1978 commander of a submarine. In 1983 he graduated from the Naval Warfare Academy NG Kuznetsov , was chief of staff of the 42nd Special Brigade of Large Submarines and then used as the commander of this brigade. From February 1992 he commanded the 4th submarine squadron of the Northern Fleet, in January 1994 became chief of the Sevastopol garrison and at the same time first deputy to the commander of the Black Sea Fleet and, from 1998, his deputy. In July 2001 he was used as commander of the Pacific Fleet and from December 4, 2001 as the commander of the Northern Fleet. He replaced Admiral Popov , who had been suspended from duty because of the sinking of K-141 . On February 21, 2002 he was appointed admiral. On September 11, 2003, Suchkov was relieved of his post by decree of the President of the Russian Federation because of the human accident involving the submarine K-159 . The decommissioned ship sank on August 30th while traveling to the scrapping yard. After investigating the incident, the Northern Fleet military tribunal sentenced him to four years imprisonment with two years probation. He never pleaded guilty himself.

From mid-April 2005 he became an advisor to Defense Minister Ivanov on matters relating to naval warfare. From December 2007 he was President of the International Association of Civil Organizations of Fleet Veterans and Submariners.

Suchkov was married and had two sons. He died after a long illness in a Moscow military hospital and was buried in the Troyekurovo cemetery.
