Genya Ravan

Genya Ravan (born January 1, 1940 in Łódź , Poland ; actually Genyusha Zelkowitz ) is an American rock singer.

Life

As a survivor of the Holocaust, Genyusha Zelkowitz came to America with her parents and a sister in 1947 . The rest of the family died in German concentration camps. After a difficult childhood and early adolescence, which was marked by bad friends, arguments with the traditional home, an early marriage, the breakout and the attempt to stand on your own two feet.

Stage name

Upon arriving in America, her mother began to exchange her daughter's name for Goldie . She called herself accordingly when she joined Richie Perry's band The Escorts as lead singer and later co-founded the women's rock band Goldie and the Gingerbreads .

In 1966, after the gingerbreads were temporarily disbanded, she recorded a single Disappointed Bride under the name Patsy Cole .

After the final end of Goldie and the Gingerbreads in 1968, Genya finally took on the stage name Genya Ravan and appeared as lead singer of the newly formed fusion band Ten Wheel Drive .

For one of her first solo LPs and in honor of her father, Genya became Goldie Zelkowitz again in 1974 . She is called Genya Ravan again on her works that have been published since then and are now reissued on CD.

Producer

Genya Ravan has worked as a producer for various record labels. Among other things, she was responsible for the debut album of the punk rock band Dead Boys Young, Loud and Snotty (1977) and the come-back LP Siren by Ronnie Spector (1982). She also made a significant contribution to the latter with her own voice.

In 2001 Genya discovered the band TriPod in the CBGB , produced their demo CD and in turn contributed the background vocals for one of the tracks.

On the Jay-Z album Kingdom Come, which was published in 2006, is on the track Oh My God included a sample of Genya Ravans version of "Whipping Post."
