Batman ( Kurdish Êlih ) is a province in southeastern Turkey , north of the Dicle ( Tigris ). The province of Muş is to the north , Diyarbakır to the west , Bitlis and Siirt to the east and Mardin to the south . It is named after the Batman River. The provincial capital is the largest city ​​of the same name, Batman .

The province was created in May 1990 by Law No. 3647. Three counties were separated from the province of Siirt to the east (Beşiri, Kozluk and Sason), the remaining three counties from the southern province of Mardin . The province of Batman comprises eleven municipalities ( Belediye ) and 283 villages ( Köy ) in six districts .

Most of the Kurds live in the province . There are also zazas and Turks . There are still a few Turkmen Alevi villages in Batman, especially in the north. The vast majority of the population belongs to Sunni Islam. There are Alevi Muslims among the Zazas and the Turkmen. Yazidis are another denomination, but most of the Yazidis have left Batman. Gercüş has had a significant number of mhallami for centuries . The villages and towns of Kayapınar , Yenice and Yolağzı have a large Arab population.

At the 2011 census, the average age in the province was 19.3 years (national average: 29.6), with the female population being on average 0.7 years older than the male population (19.7-19.0).

economy

Batman Province is the center of the Turkish oil industry, the oil refinery was founded in 1955. A 494 km long pipeline connects Batman with İskenderun on the Mediterranean . In agriculture, mainly cotton is produced. There is a railway connection to Diyarbakır and Elazığ .

Sights include the Imam Abdullah Monastery and the Camiü'r Rızk and Hasankeyf Bridges .
