Geoffrey B. Greatrex

Geoffrey B. Greatrex (born November 15, 1968 in Ottawa ) is a Canadian ancient historian .

Greatrex, who received his doctorate in 1994 from Oxford with a thesis on Procopius and the Persian Wars , teaches as an Associate Professor in the Department of Classics and Religious Studies at the University of Ottawa in Ottawa, Ontario .

Greatrex is a proven expert on late antique military history and Roman - Sassanid relations (especially in the 5th and 6th centuries). He has written several important essays and monographs on the military conflicts and cultural contacts between these two ancient great powers. In addition, Greatrex, together with Samuel NC Lieu, published an important source book in 2002, in which key source excerpts have been collected in English translation, including a commentary and introductory explanations ( The Roman Eastern Frontier and the Persian Wars: 363–628 AD. A narrative Sourcebook ) . Late antique historiography (and in particular Prokopios of Caesarea ) is also a field of activity of Greatrex. He was also President of the Canadian Esperanto Society from 2004 to the end of 2005 .
