distribution and habitat

Geoffroy's wig monkeys live in central and eastern Panama and on the Pacific coast of Colombia . This makes them the only tamarins - and the only marmosets at all - whose range extends as far as Central America . Their habitat are forests with dense undergrowth, mainly secondary forests .

Lifestyle and diet

Like all marmosets, these primates are diurnal and usually stay in the trees. There they move on all fours, but they can also jump well.

They live in groups of three to nine animals. The groups are made up of a reproductive couple and the young, and sometimes other adult animals are also present. They inhabit a fixed territory of 10 to 30 hectares, which is marked with glandular secretion and defended against conspecifics.

Geoffroy's wig monkeys are omnivores that eat mostly insects and fruits. Her menu is supplemented with flowers, nectar and small vertebrates.

Reproduction

Only the dominant female in a group reproduces, the mating behavior is polyandric (when the female mates with several males) or monogamous (when the female only mates with one male). The gestation period is 140 to 145 days, most young animals are born between April and June. As with most marmosets, twin births predominate, the young weigh around 40 grams.

The father and the other group members take part in raising the young. They carry the young and only bring them to the mother to suckle. The young animals are finally weaned after two to three months, and sexual maturity occurs at the end of the second year of life.

Danger

Parts of the geoffroy's wig monkeys' distribution area fell victim to the clearing of the forest, another danger is the hunting of these animals, which are made into pets . In some cases, the species is still widespread and common. The stocks are declining, but not to a worrying extent , according to the IUCN . It lists the species as not endangered ( least concern ).
