Geohintonia mexicana is the only plant species of the monotypic genus Geohintonia in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The generic name was named in honor of George Sebastian Hinton (* 1949), a Mexican farmer and plant collector from the state of Nuevo León .
description
The plants are spherical stem succulents up to 10 cm in diameter and 11 cm in height. The blue-green plant body has 18 to 20 uncontaminated ribs. The areoles run along the ribs and are very close. Up to 3 thorns are formed on young areoles , but they soon fall off. The thorns are up to 1.2 cm long and yellowish in color. The flowers are 2 to 4 cm in diameter and appear in the apex. They are open during the day and are pink to magenta in color.
Distribution and ecology
The plants grow exclusively in Mexico in the state of Nuevo León on gypsum hills. Aztec hintonii can still be found at the site. It is believed that the species could have originated from a natural hybrid with Aztekium hintonii as one of the parents. The species is considered critically endangered and has been included in Appendix II of the Washington Convention on Endangered Species (CITES).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Near Threatened (NT) ", d. H. listed as low risk.
Systematics
The plants were discovered in 1991 by George S. Hinton and in 1992 the genus and species were first described by Charles Edward Glass and Walter Alfred Fitz Maurice . A synonym was created by a not accepted recombination in 2000 to Echinocactus mexicanus ( Glass & WAFitz Maurice ) Halda .
In recent studies a close relationship to Aztec was found.
