Georg Caspar Wecker (baptized April 2, 1632 in Nuremberg ; † April 20, 1695 there ) was a German composer and organist of the Baroque era .

Origin and education

Wecker's parents were Agnes, geb. Schneider, and Johann Wecker, gold spinner by profession, who had at least received a musical education, since Georg Caspar Wecker learned the musical basics from him. The Nuremberg composer and organist Johann Erasmus Kindermann was Wecker's next teacher, with whom he learned so much that he was allowed to play the organ in Nuremberg churches at the age of 16. Wecker had been married to Anna Maria Löhner since 1658, with whom he had nine children.

Career history

From 1651 on, Wecker was organist at Nuremberg churches throughout his life: from 1651 at the St. Walburga Church, from 1658 as Paul Hainlein's successor at the St. Aegidien Church. When Hainlein died in 1686, Wecker was again his successor, as organist at the important parish church of St. Sebald. He held this position until the end of his life, and was succeeded by his student Johann Pachelbel . Johann Krieger was also one of his students . Wecker's successor at St. Aegidia was Albrecht Martin Lunßdörffer .
