Georg Constantin Bouris or Georgios Vouris (Γεώργιος Βούρης, * 1802 in Vienna ; † July 14, 1860 ibid) was a Greek-Austrian astronomer and the first director of the Athens observatory .

Life

The von Bouris family fled Ioannina to Vienna in the 18th century , where they were persecuted by Ali Pascha . Bouris' father was a wealthy businessman. Georg Constantin Bouris studied philosophy and law at the University of Vienna , but dropped both subjects in favor of his passion for astronomy. Although he studied with Andreas von Ettingshausen and Joseph Johann von Littrow , he also continued his autodidactic training. In 1826 he took over the management of the Greek school in Vienna, which he held for ten years, during which time he calculated the orbit of Biela's comet at the kuk observatory in Vienna . From 1836 he taught physics at the University of Athens , but had to give up the position and decided to retire from civil service entirely.

Georg Constantin Bouris became the first director of the Athens observatory , which was donated by Baron Simon of Sina . Bouris also took over the planning of the construction on Nymphenhügel and chose the furnishings for the building. After his illness, he was replaced by Johann Friedrich Julius Schmidt in Athens , went to Germany for a cure and then died in his home town of Vienna.
