Johann Georg Pfeffer (born March 7, 1854 in Berlin ; † December 4, 1931 ) was a German zoologist .

Life

Pfeffer was a malacologist . In 1887 he became the museum director of the Natural History Museum founded in Hamburg in 1843 , which was destroyed in World War II. Pfeffer worked there as a curator and published scientific works mainly on cephalopods (cephalopods). He described, among other things, the miracle lamps ( Lycoteuthis ). Pfeffer tried to further simplify Darwin's teaching. He commented on the following:

“The struggle for existence weeds out all bad pieces and lets some of the average individuals of the species survive; Changes in the external living conditions change the species by changing the average of the surviving pieces, thus imposing a different overall character on the mass of the species and making it appear to relatives as a different passport, variety or species. The remaining part of Darwin's doctrine, namely the gradual breeding of the new passes and species, thus appears unnecessary; the original DarwiN principle of the survival of the fitting is sufficient for an understanding of the possible changes in shape.
