Georg Krücken (born September 21, 1962 in Bad Honnef ) is a German sociologist and university researcher and director of the International Center for Higher Education Research Kassel (INCHER-Kassel) at the University of Kassel . At INCHER-Kassel, questions related to university and studies are researched and topics are taken up that lie at the interfaces between university research and related research areas such as science, organization and innovation research. It is one of the few higher education research institutions in Germany that is located at a university and has been the only research institution of its kind for more than three decades. It is also one of the most important international institutions for university research.In addition, Georg Krücken has been chairman of the Society for University Research since 2014 , which brings together university researchers from various specialist disciplines in German-speaking countries.

Life

Krücken studied sociology , philosophy and political science at the universities of Bielefeld and Bologna from 1981 to 1989 . He received his doctorate in 1996 with a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation on “Risk Transformation” and completed his habilitation in January 2004 with the title “Neo-Institutionalism: Basics, Applications, Criticism and Perspectives”, both at the Faculty of Sociology in Bielefeld.

Longer research stays had crutches in Stanford and Paris. Between 1999 and 2001 he was a visiting scholar at the Department of Sociology at Stanford University (USA) as a DFG habilitation fellow and in spring 2005 visiting professor at the Center de Sociologie des Organizations Paris. For the summer semester 2011 he returned as a visiting scholar at the School of Education at Stanford University (USA) and in 2016 he completed a research semester as a visiting scholar at Sciences Po , Center de Sociologie des Organizations in Paris.

Between 2006 and 2011, Krücken held the first chair for science organization, university and science management at the German University of Administrative Sciences Speyer , before accepting the professorship for university research at the University of Kassel . He was also a regular guest lecturer at the University of Vienna . Since 2014 he has been chairman of the Society for University Research . In 2016 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea .

Krücken does research especially in the field of university research and the sociology of science . His special focus is on the combination of neo-institutional theory in organizational research with a more macro-sociological view of world society. Since both approaches are particularly rooted in American theory and research, Krücken also brings in the European strands of social theory . As a result, the neo-institutionalist emphasis on isomorphic tendencies is complemented by differentiation tendencies at both the social and organizational level, which leads to the redesign of central concepts in neo-institutionalist analysis. His editing activities for the works of John W. Meyer also contributed to the spread of the neo-institutionalist approaches in Germany . In addition, he has dealt with questions of competition in the university system in recent years. Here he tries to combine the perspectives of neo-institutionalism with those of university research.

In addition to numerous publications, his scientific work also led to the European research network New Institutionalism , of which he is a co-initiator. Since the network was founded in 2004, he has been the spokesman for the network, which annually organizes scientific conferences in various European countries.
