Georg Matthies

Georg Matthies (born December 14, 1887 in Peine , † November 11, 1914 in Wismar ) was a German classical archaeologist .

After attending grammar school in Wismar until Easter 1906, he studied classical archeology in Marburg , Berlin and Göttingen , where he received his doctorate on April 17, 1912 with Gustav Körte with the dissertation "The praenestine mirrors". For 1913–1915 he was awarded a travel grant from the German Archaeological Institute . During this time he took part in the excavations at Tiryns Castle in March 1914 . He died at the beginning of the First World War .
