Georg Merrem

Georg Merrem (born September 21, 1908 in Königsberg (Prussia) , † July 8, 1971 in Leipzig ) was a German neurosurgeon .

Life

Merrem was the son of the surgeon Karl Blasius Merrem and after graduating from high school in Berlin studied medicine in Tübingen and Berlin from 1927 to 1932. He joined the NSDAP in 1931 . He completed his internship at the Hedwigs Hospital in Berlin from 1932 and was then an assistant doctor at the Augusta Hospital Berlin. In 1933 he was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate ( The treatment of multiple sclerosis with Germanin ) and 1938 specialist in surgery. From 1939 to 1946 he was a surgeon in the Wehrmacht in military hospitals and was also a senior brain surgeon. After being a prisoner of war, he became the first senior surgeon at the Dresden-Johannstadt City Hospital in 1947.

In 1949 Merrem became head of neurosurgery at the Psychiatric and Nervous Clinic at the University of Leipzig. In 1951 he qualified as a professor in surgery and neurosurgery ( surgery of the ventricular system as the result of histopathological observations and neurosurgical experience ) and became a lecturer. In 1954 he became director of the newly founded neurosurgical clinic at the University of Leipzig, in 1955 professor with a teaching position for neurosurgery and in 1959 professor with a chair in Leipzig. From 1959 to 1961 he was dean of the medical faculty in Leipzig and from 1961 to 1963 vice dean. From 1969 he was a full professor. From 1959 to 1962 he was also acting head of neurosurgery at the surgical university clinic in Halle.

Georg Merrem's grave and relatives

In 1969 he received the Fedor Krause Medal (and became an honorary member of the German Society for Neurosurgery), in 1960 the Hufeland Medal and in 1961 he became an Honored Doctor of the People . In 1960 he became a member of the Saxon Academy of Sciences and in 1963 of the Leopoldina . 1960 to 1962 he was the second chairman of the German Society for Neurosurgery. In 1960 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (surgery section) and in 1963 he was co-founder and until 1966 first chairman of the Society for Neurosurgery of the GDR.

His grave is located in the Leipzig South Cemetery .

He was married to Anni Merrem, nee Jacob.
