Epitaph for Georg Neumair in the former collegiate church of the Birth of Mary in Rottenbuch

Georg Neumair († July 1, 1472 ) was provost of the Augustinian Canon monastery in Rottenbuch , a municipality in the Upper Bavarian district of Weilheim-Schongau .

Life

Georg Neumair was provost of the monastery from 1431 until his death in 1472. Under him the high tower of the monastery church was completed in 1439.

After Georg Neumair's death, an epitaph made of red marble stone was erected for him in the monastery church . It shows him in full figure, dressed in alb and chasuble . He also wears the episcopal miter , which he was entitled to do since 1442. Whether it belongs to the original conception of the epitaph is controversial. In the pointed arch field there are two angels with incense sticks and a censer and two lions at his feet. The inscription around the edge in Gothic minuscule reads:

"Anno dni mcccclxii obiit venerabilis pater et dns georgius newmayr huius cenobii prepositus et archidiac cuius anima in pace requiescat".
