Georg Niege

Georg Niege (born November 25, 1525 in Allendorf , † 1589 in Herford ) was a German mercenary and poet .

Life

Niege went under the Landsknechte after he had acquired the Baccalauréat of the liberal arts at the University of Marburg in 1545 . He took part as a simple mercenary, later as a model writer , from 1564 as a captain in numerous wars and campaigns in the empire , in Scotland and in Sweden . Through the mediation of the mercenary leader Georg von Holle , he received the office of secretary of the land and knighthood of the bishopric Minden in 1567 . From 1569 to 1576 he administered the office of Hausberge , but could not hold his own in this position. In 1578 he went to war in the Netherlands as mayor under Caspar Müller. He spent his last years as administrator of the Johanniterkommende Lage near Osnabrück and as a private citizen in Herford .

Services

Niege wrote German and Latin poems, as well as a rhyming autobiography . He also set some of the songs to music. Little of it was printed during his lifetime. However, his song From the bottom of my heart became known , one of the most popular Protestant church hymns ( Evangelical Hymnal No. 443). He was a skilled poet, humorous, and a devout Lutheran Christian of the Filipino direction.
