Georg Schmitz (composer)

Georg Schmitz (* 1958 in Neuwied , Rhine) is a German composer and music teacher .

Live and act

Georg Schmitz attended the Johannes-Gymnasium of the Arnsteiner Fathers in Lahnstein, which he graduated in 1977 with the Abitur. During school he received lessons in guitar, piano and harmony. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory and at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . In addition to study visits to Hungary and Poland, Schmitz attended master classes with Konrad Ragossnig , Hubert Käppel and David Russell, among others . Several times he took part in the IRCAM summer academies in Paris. During his studies he taught at the Peter Cornelius Conservatory in Mainz, after completing his studies at the music school in Koblenz. He heads the plucked instruments department and teaches guitar and music theory.

In 1992 Schmitz initiated the International Whitsun Seminar, from which the Koblenz International Guitar Festival developed.

In 2001 Schmitz founded the music school's guitar academy together with Hubert Käppel , which prepares highly gifted students for their studies.

In 2007 the Koblenz International Guitar Academy was founded as a year-round facility of the Koblenz International Guitar Festival and is dedicated to the training and further education of young guitarists.
