George-Daniel de Monfreid

George-Daniel de Monfreid , called Géo de Monfreid , (born March 14, 1856 in New York , † November 26, 1929 in Corneilla-de-Conflent , Pyrénées-Orientales ) was a French art collector and painter.

Life

Monfreid was born in the USA , but spent almost all of his childhood and youth in southern France ( Département Aude ), where his parents came from. There he was always able to admire artists who painted pleine-aire and that is why he decided early on to also become a painter.

He went to Paris and became a student at the Académie Julian . During this time he made a. a. the acquaintance of Paul Gauguin , Aristide Maillol , Victor Segalen and Paul Verlaine .

Together with his friend and colleague Gustave Fayet , Monfreid was the first to recognize Gauguin's art and also to collect his paintings. Monfreid is also considered Gauguin's first biographer.

At the age of 73, George-Daniel de Monfreid died on November 26, 1929 in Corneilla-de-Conflent, where he found his final resting place.

His son is the writer Henri de Monfreid (1879–1974).
