George Adams (anthroposophist)
George Adams , actually George von Kaufmann (born February 8, 1894 in Marijampolė , Russian Empire , † March 30, 1963 in Birmingham ) was a British mathematician and anthroposophist .
Life
George Adams was born in what was then East Galicia as the son of the Australian-German industrialist Georg von Kaufmann and the Englishwoman Mary Adams . He studied chemistry (BA) and mathematics (MA) at the University of Cambridge between 1912 and 1918 ; he dealt intensively with the works of Whitehead and Russell .
In 1914 he got to know Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy ; he worked as an interpreter for his lectures in England and later translated numerous works by Steiner into English. In 1916 he joined the Anthroposophical Society . His own work deals with questions of Goetheanism , for example with projective geometry , after 1935 partly together with his colleague Olive Whicher.
In 1939 he volunteered for military service in London and was initially used as an interpreter in a prison camp, but was released after six months. After his German relations were critically examined, he called himself George Adams from 1940 . Until the end of the war he continued to serve as an eavesdropper for BBC monitoring and air raid protection.
He died with a befriended family in Edgbaston , a suburb of Birmingham , almost four years after a serious heart attack .
