George Austin Welsh

George Austin Welsh (born August 9, 1878 in Bay View , Cecil County , Maryland , †  October 22, 1970 in Media , Pennsylvania ) was an American lawyer and politician . Between 1923 and 1932 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives ; then he became a federal judge .

Career

George Welsh attended public schools in the greater Philadelphia area and then studied at Temple University there . Between 1895 and 1901 he was a stenographer and press officer ( reporter ) for the state legislature. After a subsequent law degree at Temple University and his admission to the bar in 1905, he began to work in Philadelphia in this profession. He was Secretary to the Mayor of Philadelphia in 1905 and 1906. From 1906 to 1907 he was one of the legal representatives of this city. He then served as assistant district attorney in Philadelphia County from 1907 to 1922 . In 1917 he interrupted this activity to attend an officer training course for the US Army at Fort Niagara . The background was the American entry into the First World War . George Welsh was Secretary of Temple University between 1914 and 1938; then he acted as their vice-president. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . From 1914 to 1932 he was their district chairman. He also served on the Philadelphia County Education Committee from 1921 to 1932.

In the 1922 congressional election , Welsh was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded George P. Darrow on March 4, 1923 . After four re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his official resignation on May 31, 1932 . From 1925 to 1927 he was chairman of the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions .

Welsh's resignation came after his appointment as a federal district court judge for the eastern part of the state of Pennsylvania. He held this office until 1957. Then he retired; but he continued to work as a senior judge . This enabled him to step in as a substitute judge if necessary. George Welsh died on October 22, 1970 at the age of 92 in Media, where he spent the last years of his life.
