Life

George Barnard owned a large collection of insects with an emphasis on butterflies and beetles and a large collection of bird eggs. In 1891 he built a museum for his collections on his property in Coomooboolaroo. After his death, the insect collection was bought by the Walter Rothschild Zoological Museum in Tring . Albert Stewart Meek , who was a friend of Barnard's, had drawn Lord Rothschild's attention to this collection.

Barnard made numerous ornithological contributions to Alfred John North's Catalog of the Nests and Eggs of Birds Found Breeding in Australia and Tasmania (1889). His first wife, Maria Barnard, provided drawings of the birds. The couple had seven children, including Charles Ashmall Barnard (1867–1942), a founding member and later president of the Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union .
