George Burgwyn Anderson
George Burgwyn Anderson (born April 12, 1831 near Hillsboro , North Carolina , † October 16, 1862 in Raleigh , North Carolina) was a Brigadier General of the Confederate Army in the Civil War .
Life
George Burgwyn Anderson was the eldest son of Willian E. and Eliza Anderson, b. Burgwyn, born. After school, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , North Carolina. At the age of 17 he was sent to the Military Academy at West Point , New York , which he graduated in 1852 as the tenth best of 43 in his class as a lieutenant. After various military assignments, he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1855. In 1859 he was transferred to Louisville , Kentucky , where he married Mildred Ewing.
After the outbreak of the Civil War he was promoted to brigadier general in 1862 and led his units on May 5, 1862 in the Battle of Williamsburg and in the Seven Day Battle from June 25 to July 1, 1862. In the following years several were under his command Brigades combined and so was the 4th, 13th, and 40th North Carolina Regiments under his command. On September 17, 1862, near Sharpsburg, at the Battle of Antietam , Anderson was hit in the foot by a bullet. The painful wound refused to heal, became infected, and he was taken to Richmond first. Since no one could help him there, he was transferred to the Raleigh hospital, where it was decided to have an amputation 30 days after the wounding. George Burgwyn Anderson passed away the morning after the operation at the age of 31.
