George Cartwright was a Australian football player . The goalkeeper was in goal in ten official international matches for the Australian national team in the 1920s .

Career

Originally from Balmain , Cartwright won the Nurse Cup in 1912 as a goalkeeper with an U-18 team from the Leichhardt Rovers and later played for Balmain-Fernleigh from Sydney in the Metropolitan League .

In 1922 he was part of an Australian touring team that played a total of 14 games in New Zealand. These included three games that were played against the New Zealand national team and are considered the first three international matches in Australian football history. Cartwright guarded the goal in all three games (one draw, two defeats), which were played in front of an audience of over 10,000 people, unknown for Australasian conditions, and played in five other games against regional and city selections during the tour.

In the following years he was part of the Australian national team against touring teams. In 1923, the New Zealand national team traveled to Australia, also here he came to two international appearances, including a 2-1 win on June 9, 1923, when Australia achieved their first international win in the first home game in international history. In August 1923 he played in two games in Newcastle and Sydney against a Chinese selection, in June and July 1924 five more official international appearances against Canada followed , in which a positive record was achieved (three wins, one draw, one defeat). Another highlight came in mid-1925, when a selection of national players Teddy Davison , Len Graham , Harry Hardy , Ernie Simms and Charlie Spencer from the English Football Association toured Australia for two months. Although the games are not considered official A internationals, Cartwright was featured in four out of five games in which an Australian national team played, including a minor success with a narrow 1: 2 defeat (the English selection won all 25 games with a goal difference of 139: 13).

With ten official international appearances, Cartwright was Australian record goalkeeper for decades, only Ron Corry outbid him in the late 1960s. Cartwright is considered to be the first goalkeeper to stand in the tradition of outstanding Australian goalkeepers, which was carried on by players like Jimmy McNabb , Jim Fraser and Mark Schwarzer .
