The Rakotzsee (from Sorbian rak ' cancer ') is an artificially created lake in the azalea and rhododendron park Kromlau and is located in the district of Kromlau in the municipality of Gablenz in the district of Görlitz . It is approx. 300 m long and approx. 35 to 50 m wide. In the middle the lake is spanned by the 35 m long Rakotzbrücke. Also in the middle of the lake is a group of basalt steles called the "organ".

Rakotzbrücke and drained Rakotzsee

Since the lake has no natural inflow, its water level is maintained by means of a pump. There are considerations to feed it from a natural watercourse.

In 2017, the Rakotzsee and the bridge served as the backdrop for the film The Sorcerer's Apprentice . The Rakotzbrücke, closed in a circle thanks to the reflection of the water, acted as a gateway to the parallel world.

In order to rehabilitate the Rakotz Bridge, which is in danger of collapsing, and to reconstruct the grotto that collapsed in 1952, the water level of the lake was drained until the work is expected to be completed in 2020.
