George Coats (medic)

George Coats (* 1876 in Paisley , † October 1915 in London ) was a Scottish ophthalmologist. He was the first person to describe Coats' disease .

Coats studied medicine in Glasgow from 1892 to 1897 and received his doctorate there in 1901. He continued his studies in ophthalmology in Vienna , Munich , Freiburg and Zurich . In 1903 he received the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and was allowed to practice in England from then on . Despite numerous calls to teaching hospitals, he was an assistant surgeon at the Royal London Ophthalmic Hospital and an assistant eye surgeon at St. Mary's Hospital there until the time of his death.

In 1908 he was the first to describe Coats' disease (in the London Ophthalmic Hospital Report).
