The Warsaw Sports and Tourism Museum (Polish: Muzeum Sportu i Turystyki ) is located in the "Olympic Center" (Polish: Centrum Olimpijskie w Warszawie ) in the Żoliborz district . It was founded in 1952 and has around 46,000 exhibits, 16,500 books and 50,000 photos.

history

The museum is one of the oldest of its kind in Europe. Since 1950 the creation of a collection of objects related to the history of sport has been planned. In October 1952, orders were issued to set up such a collection in Warsaw. The first exhibition open to the general public opened in 1955. In 1966 the museum moved to Warsaw's Skra Stadium on Wawelska Street. Exhibitions shown here were designed by well-known artists and exhibition designers such as Wojciech Zamecznik or Jan Kosiński.

In 2005 the museum moved to the new building of the Olympic Center , where the newly designed exhibition was opened on November 5, 2006. The first permanent exhibition shown here was entitled “History of Polish Sports and the Olympics” and was designed by the award winners Jarosław Kłaput and Dariusz Kunowski. Most of the exhibition space is now on the 2nd floor of the building. The mountaineering department on the 4th floor can be reached on the stairs that pass through the fitness club on the 3rd floor.

The museum is registered in the State Museum Register of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and is funded by the Provincial Government of Mazovia . The address of the museum is Ulica Wybrzeże Gdyńskie 4.

exhibition

The permanent exhibition is dedicated to the history of 30 sports: basketball, mountaineering, biathlon, archery, boxing, fencing, flying, football, cross-country skiing, weightlifting, gymnastics, judo, handball, hockey, canoeing, cycling, horse riding, rowing, shooting, swimming, Sailing, skating, skiing, snowboarding, speedway, tennis, table tennis, rallying, wrestling, volleyball and decathlon. Since its inception, the museum has also organized around 150 special exhibitions, and parts of the fund have been shown at 23 foreign exhibitions.

Around 3,000 exhibits and 600 photos are shown on 1,000 square meters of exhibition space. In addition to historical and modern sports equipment, trophies (medals, cups, badges, ...), coins, flags, emblems, sports equipment, posters, newspaper reports, works of art and stamps on the topic are presented. Outstanding athletes of their time are portrayed on the history of Polish sport. The oldest exhibits include items from the “Sokół” gymnastics association founded in Lviv in 1867 , the Warsaw rowing club founded in 1878 , the Warsaw bicycle club founded in 1886 and the Warsaw ice skating organization founded in 1893 .

Among the acknowledged Polish athletes of the exhibition include Waldemar Baszanowski , Bronisław Czech , Kazimierz Deyna , Józef Grudzień , Jadwiga Jędrzejowska , Otylia Jędrzejczak , Wladyslaw Komar , Robert Korzeniowski , Jerzy Kukuczka , Zdzislaw Krzyszkowiak , Elżbieta Krzesińska , Stanisław Królak , Jerzy Kulej , Janusz Kusociński , Mateusz Kusznierewicz , Maria Kwaśniewska , Bronislaw Malinowski , Adam Malysz , Stanisław Marusarz , Wanda Rutkiewicz , Irena Szewińska , Ryszard Szurkowski , Tadeusz Ślusarski , Stanislawa Walasiewicz , Andrzej Wroński , Jacek Wszoła and Andrzej Zawada .

library

The museum's extensive book collection has been accessible to interested parties since 1959. At the end of 2006 this library had 16,500 copies. Around 65% of the available works relate to sports topics. The rest deals with topics related to museum studies, history and ethnography. Catalogs and reference works are also available.

photos

Photos have also been collected since the museum was founded. The 50,000 or so photos available document important sporting events in Poland or those worldwide in which Polish athletes were involved. Around 4,000 photos are from years before 1939. The collection is constantly growing thanks to private donations and regular donations by the Central Photo Agency CAF and the Polish Press Agency PAP .
