Dance had five sons, three of whom were also well known. The eldest son, James Dance, became known as an actor at the Theater Royal Drury Lane . The third son, Nathaniel Dance-Holland , became a portrait painter and politician. The fifth son George Dance the Younger also achieved fame as an architect.

Dance's grave was originally in the sacristy of St Luke Old Street Church and was later moved to the church graveyard.
