Nathaniel Dance-Holland RA (born May 18, 1735 in Great Britain , † October 15, 1811 in Little Wittenham near Didcot ) was a British portrait painter and politician .

Nathaniel was born the third son of the architect George Dances the Elder . He studied with Francis Hayman and deepened his studies in Italy, partly together with his brother George Dance the younger . In Rome he met Angelica Kauffmann . In 1761 he was elected a member of the Incorporated Society of Artists . Back in London in 1768 he was a founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts . Among other things, he received orders to paint the portraits of King George III. , the navigator James Cook and the actor David Garrick .

In 1790 Dance married Harriet, daughter of Cecil Bishopp and widow of Thomas Dummer, who died in 1781, both members of parliament . He gave up the painting career and from then on devoted himself to politics. Out of respect for a certain Charlotte Holland of Wigmore Street, Cavendish Square, he added “Dance-Holland” to his family name. From 1790 until his death in 1811 he was a member of the Parliament of Great Britain and from 1801 the Parliament of the United Kingdom . From 1790 to 1802 he represented East Grinstead , from 1802 to 1806 Great Bedwyn , and from 1807 again East Grinstead. Dance-Holland died in Little Wittenham northeast of Didcot in 1811 ; his wife lived until 1825.
