George Degner
George Degner (* 1847 in Stettin ; † February 24, 1894 in New York City ) was a German-American ship's doctor and surgeon .
Life
George Degner began studying medicine at the University of Bonn , where he became a member of the Corps Hansea in 1867 . In the same year he moved to the University of Greifswald and joined the Corps Pomerania there. He took part in the Franco-German War as a military doctor in Spandau . After the end of the war he became a ship's doctor with the North German Loyd . In 1879 he settled permanently in New York City . Here he worked as a surgeon at the German Hospital until his death and also for a few years at St. Mark's Hospital .
He was one of the best known and most respected German doctors in New York. His medical commitment was unselfish and self-sacrificing. He was considered a gifted surgeon. For example, a patient suffering from larynx cancer recovered from a larynx extirpation performed by Degner and survived it for more than three years until he died of pneumonia , which was a major medical success in the 19th century.
In 1882 Degner founded the Old Men Seniors Convent New York.
