Georgios Ikonomou

Georgios Ikonomou ( Greek Γεώργιος Οικονόμου or George Economou , * 1953 in Athens ) is a Greek shipowner and art collector. In 2008, Ikonomou ranked 707th on Forbes' list of the richest entrepreneurs in the world. According to a 2007 survey, he is the fourth largest Greek shipowner (in terms of both tonnage and number of ships) and the second largest owner of Panamax ships in the world.

Life

Ikonomou studied shipbuilding at MIT and began his professional career as superintendent engineer for the Thenamaris Ship Management company of the Martinos family. From 1986 to 1991 he participated in various shipping companies and founded Cardiff Marine Inc. in 1991 and later DryShips Inc., which have been listed on the NASDAQ since February 2005 , and DryTank. In 1997 he moved the headquarters of his companies from Piraeus to Marousi .

In 2006 Ikonomou began to build an art collection managed by Dimitri Gravanis and Irini Dimitrakopoulou. In total, the collection includes 2000 works, primarily by German artists such as Christian Schad and George Grosz, but also by lesser-known artists such as Werner Schramm . In 2010, he loaned around 500 prints by Otto Dix to the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung München .

An overview from the George Economou Collection was shown for the first time at the opening of the new rooms of the Athens Municipal Gallery .
