George Edgcumbe

George Edgcumbe (born June 23, 1800 - February 18, 1882 ) was a British diplomat and politician who was once elected as a member of the House of Commons .

Origin and youth

George Edgcumbe came from the English noble family Edgcumbe . He was the third and youngest son of Richard Edgcumbe, 2nd Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and his wife Sophia Hobart . He attended Harrow School in 1812 before studying at Balliol College , Oxford from 1818 .

Activity as a politician and as a diplomat

1826 Edgcumbe major in the militia of Cornwall , he retained this position until 1855. In the general election in 1826, he was on June 10 as MP for the Borough Plympton Erle elected, where his father had considerable political influence. However, he was not active in the House of Commons and resigned his mandate on December 2, 1826. Instead, he entered the diplomatic service and served from 1828 to 1830 as a legation secretary at the British legation in Switzerland. He then was legation secretary at the British Embassy in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany from 1831 to 1837 , then again briefly in Switzerland until 1838 and then until 1858 at the Embassy in the Kingdom of Hanover .

Family and offspring

Edgcumbe had married Fanny Shelly, daughter of Sir John Shelley, 6th Baronet , on May 19, 1834 . With her he had two sons and four daughters, including:

  • Edward Mortimer Edgcumbe (1847-1890)
  • Caroline Cecilia Edgcumbe († 1909)
  • Emma Frances Edgcumbe († 1854)
  • Elizabeth Katherine Edgcumbe (1841-1918)
  • Emily Fanny Georgina Edgcumbe (around 1850–1915)

On the occasion of his marriage, Edgcumbe had received £ 10,000 from his father, and he inherited another £ 1,000 in 1839 after his father's death. After the childless death of the 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe in 1944, George Edgcumbe's grandson Kenelm Edgcumbe inherited the title. After Edgcumbe's death in 1965, descendants of Edgcumbe's younger son Edward inherited the title.
