The National Highway 4 is (NH 4) one of eight national highways Cambodia and part of the Asian Highways 11 (AH 11) and the Asian highways 123 (AH 123) . It is located in the southwest of Cambodia and connects the capital Phnom Penh with the country's only port and the port city of Sihanoukville . The road is 230 kilometers long.
course
The NH 4 begins in the west of Phnom Penh. The road is two lane and generally of good quality and runs in a south westerly direction. The second part of the NH 4 leads through a flat, wooded area and through oil palm plantations, via Veal Renh where it joins the National Highway 4 and ends in Sihanoukville.
history
The NH 4 is not as old as other highways in Cambodia, as the port of Sihanoukville and the city itself have only been expanded since the 1950s. During this time the NH 4 was also built. The port was completed in the early 1960s. Since then it has been one of the main routes in Cambodia due to its economic importance as a transport route between the country's only port and the capital Phnom Penh. The port of Sihanoukville was built because Cambodia did not have access to other overseas ports after independence. Because of its importance, the connection is to be expanded to include multiple lanes in the coming years.
