George Friedmann , maiden name György Friedmann (born 1910 in Miskolc , Austria-Hungary ; died 2002 in Buenos Aires , Argentina ), also Georges or Jorge Friedman, was an Argentine cameraman and photographer of Hungarian-Jewish origin.

Life

György Friedmann left his hometown Miskolc in 1927 to go to Paris. There he took photographs in the following years for the studios of Manuel Frères and published in the magazines Pour Vous and L'Intransigéant . From 1933 he found work in the film industry in Paris, London and Hollywood for the film companies Pathé , Paramount Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer as a still photographer and cameraman . In 1939 he fled Europe and settled in Argentina, where he worked as a photo editor and publisher. Works have appeared in illustrated magazines and at Atlántida , but also in reportage and travel magazines such as Vu , Paris Match , Time and Life . He also made advertising recordings, for example for the Olivetti and Shell companies.

In 1947 he started working for Abril magazine . His subjects were above all the people in the countryside, in the Argentine provinces, the life of the gauchos and the workers in the mines and factories - everyday life in all its facets, but also political and cultural events, as well as sport.

At the beginning of the 1950s he co-founded the artist group “La Carpeta de los Diez”, a loose association of photographers in South America. Among them was the internationally known German photographer Max Jacoby , who was an apprentice to George Friedmann.

In 1971 Friedmann took over the editing of the newly founded Argentine women's magazine Idilio , for which he also worked as a chief photographer. Another well-known photographer who worked frequently for Idilio was Grete Stern . He put his focus on opulently prepared photo stories ( photo novelas ). He also taught photography. He has received numerous international awards for his photographic work. He died in Buenos Aires at the age of 92, blind due to a hereditary eye disease.
