George G. Goble

George G. Goble (born September 11, 1929 in Eagle , Ada County , Idaho , † September 19, 2017 in Longmont (Colorado) ) was an American civil engineer ( geotechnical engineering , structural engineering), known for developing dynamic pile tests.

Goble studied civil engineering at the University of Idaho ( Bachelor in 1951) and the University of Washington , where he made his master's degree in 1957 and received his doctorate in 1961 (in structural engineering, with a minor in geotechnics). In between he spent two years in the Army Air Force in Wiesbaden . He worked as a design engineer at Marshall, Barr and Associates in Seattle and was in 1957/58 with a Fulbright scholarship at the Technical University of Stuttgart . He was a professor at Case Western Reserve University (1975 to 1976 as head of the Faculty of Civil Engineering) and from 1977 at the University of Colorado , where he was head of the Faculty of Civil Engineering from 1977 to 1983. In the 1970s he founded Goble and Associates (Goble Rausche Likens, now GRL Engineering), which developed the dynamic pile test program WEAP (Wave Equation Analysis of Piles). In 1992 he retired from the university. He runs his own engineering office (George G. Goble Consulting Engineer) in Boulder , Colorado (and the company Bridge Diagnostics) and, after his retirement, was also an adjunct professor at Utah State University .

Goble developed dynamic stake tests with Robert H. Scanlan , Fred Moses, F. Rausche (his PhD student), and others at Case Western Reserve University in the 1960s and was a pioneer in the field at the time. Among other things, the CAPWAP program (Case Pile Wave Analysis Program) was created here. The project, which was funded by the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) from 1964 , originally had its roots in the 1950s, when scientists at Case Western were doing secret research into the intrusion behavior of missiles upon impact. When this research ended, they (under the direction of HR Nara) investigated the penetration of piles with similar methods and found good correlations between dynamic measurements during driving and the pile load-bearing capacity (RJ Eiber 1958). Goble founded Pile Dynamics Inc., which in 1972 brought out the commercial program PDA (Pile Driving Analyzer), which was widely used.

In 1965 he received the Collingwood Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). In 2007 he gave the Terzaghi Lecture (Application of dynamic methods to the design and installation of driven piles) .

He was married to Sabine Goble, with whom he had a son and a daughter, and in 1990 he was married to Christine Larsen Goble for the second time.
